Lewes Lib Dems release:

Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Lewes constituency, James MacCleary, has called on the new Prime Minister Liz Truss to scrap the energy price hike and call a General Election
.

James MacCleary is just 2,457 behind the sitting Conservative MP Maria Caulfield, making the next General Election a clear contest between the Lib Dems and Conservatives.

Responding to Liz Truss winning the Conservative Party Leadership Contest, Parliamentary Candidate for Lewes constituency, which includes Seaford, Polegate, Newhaven, Lewes and nearby villages, said:

“Liz Truss has no mandate to be Prime Minister and should call a General Election in the next few months so that she can put forward her plans to voters. In the meantime, we need to see urgent action on the cost of living emergency.

“She and her party have sat on their hands while the crisis has got worse and worse. They have seemed more concerned with defending Boris Johnson than with putting forward a real plan to help people who are struggling.

“The government needs to get on board with Liberal Democrat calls to freeze energy bills. Many people are very concerned about how they will pay spiralling energy bills alongside rising inflation. We need real action, not more empty promises and excuses.

“Liz Truss says she is the right person to be Prime Minister but is only in that position thanks to the votes of a tiny minority of voters - less than 0.5% in fact. The only way she can claim real legitimacy and authority is to call an election and let voters decide.”
