James MacCleary MP, Member of Parliament for the Lewes constituency and Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Europe, has been personally sanctioned by Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia. The Kremlin's decision comes as retaliation for MacCleary's vocal support of Ukraine and his efforts in Parliament to hold Russia accountable for its illegal invasion and ongoing aggression, including his demands to seize frozen Russian assets.
Responding to the sanctions, James MacCleary MP said: "I see Putin’s sanctions as vindication of everything I’ve stood for.
"
Being targeted by an authoritarian regime that flouts international law, suppresses democracy, and commits appalling atrocities in Ukraine, simply means I’m doing something right.
"The Kremlin accuses the UK Parliament of 'hostile rhetoric', but the real hostility lies with Putin's brutal invasion, his cowardly attacks on civilians, and his cynical attempts to destabilise democracy across Europe. His regime's aggression is a direct threat to peace, stability, and freedom in Europe and beyond."
