Lewes Green Party release:

Lewes District Green Party has announced its candidates to stand in the 4th of May local elections. A total of 41 Greens are to stand across all wards in the District Council election against a much depleted Conservative field. The Conservatives this time have only fielded 35 candidates.

The Greens also launched a new ‘Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter’ aimed at beating the housing crisis and ensuring green spaces are protected.

Leader of the Green Party group on the District Council, Zoe Nicholson, who is seeking re-election as a Green Party Councillor, said: “I’m delighted to share our team of fantastic Green Party candidates ready to represent communities across the District in the council elections on Thursday the 4th of May. The Greens received more votes in the last District Council election than any other party and formed an alliance with Lib Dems and Labour to take control of the council. Support has rocketed since, so we are expecting a bumper result this year.

“Remember that there is no need to vote tactically in local elections, and by voting Green on Thursday the 4th of May, you will help to re-elect and grow the number of hardworking councillors right the way across the district committed to their local residents and a fairer, greener community.”

On the Green Party’s ‘Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter’, Emily O’Brien, parliamentary spokesperson, also re-standing as a District Councillor in this election, said: “Local communities in our district are facing a nightmare situation of a broken planning system, with developers being allowed to build houses local people often can’t afford and failing to ensure local services like buses and GP surgeries get the investment they need.

“Developers are being allowed to ride roughshod over the needs of communities and the environment and this has got to stop. We need councillors and national government to work together to deliver the homes people need and can afford to rent and buy, where people need them.

“The Charter would also provide greater protection for renters, with an immediate rent freeze and eviction ban to prevent people being made homeless in the middle of this cost-of-living crisis as well as a series of longer term measures.

“The Green Party’s 'Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter' will protect valuable green space for communities, reduce climate emissions, tackle fuel poverty and provide genuinely affordable housing and create fairer, greener communities.”

The announcement follows a recent visit by Caroline Lucas to launch the Green Party’s local election campaign and highlight the issue of sewage discharge into local rivers and seas.
