COUNCIL LEADER ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT ONE EAST SUSSEX UNITARY AUTHORITY

November 20th, 2025.

Lewes District Council is encouraging residents, community organisations and businesses to take part in the forthcoming consultation on local government reorganisation in Sussex and support the One East Sussex proposal.

The consultation will also include the Brighton & Hove City Council business case, which proposes dividing Lewes district into three separate parts. Earlier this year, more than 14,000 residents expressed considerable opposition to this approach.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, (pictured), Leader of Lewes District Council, explained: “We are concerned that the Brighton & Hove business case has not been subject to sufficient consultation and does not meet the government’s own requirements.

“If adopted, it will fragment Lewes district and weaken the ability of communities to shape their future.

“By contrast, the One East Sussex proposal offers a coherent and inclusive vision for the whole county, ensuring strong representation and sustainable services. I encourage residents to support One East Sussex, which keeps our communities together and gives us a stronger voice.”

The One East Sussex business case has been developed collaboratively with input from across the county. It prioritises efficiency and accountability and fairness, while recognising the importance of preserving local identities and ensuring services remain accessible. Unlike the Brighton & Hove plan, it respects existing boundaries. It also includes detailed evidence which shows that it would save £64 million over its first five years (compared to the current model) and save £25m each year in future.

Councillor Christine Robinson, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “Lewes district deserves a solution that reflects the needs of our residents, businesses and voluntary sector.

“The One East Sussex proposal is rooted in genuine consultation and a commitment to long-term sustainability.”

Lewes District Council, Eastbourne Borough Council, East Sussex County Council, Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council will continue to make the case for One East Sussex throughout the consultation period.

Councillor Chris Collier, Cabinet Member for Innovation, Delivery and People, said: “This is an important moment for our district.

“The One East Sussex business case protects our identity, strengthens services, saves considerable money and ensures the wider district community remains as one.”
