COST OF LIVING CRISIS FUND WILL 'PROVE A LIFELINE'

October 5th, 2022.

Lewes District Council has launched a cost-of-living crisis fund and is inviting bids from voluntary, community and not-for-profit organisations for projects that address food resilience, advice services, tackling digital exclusion and green energy.

Awards of between £500 and £10,000 will support a wide range of new and existing initiatives, including foodbanks and community larders, cookery classes, pop up advice clinics, access to online services and options for cheaper, greener heating and energy.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “We have committed £750,000 for various channels of cost-of-living support that I have no doubt will prove a lifeline for many over the coming months.

“This latest fund will deliver projects and services that can reach right across our communities, giving vital help and expert guidance to the greatest number of residents.”

The deadline for this first round of bids is midnight on 31st October 2022.

Additionally, plans are being made to establish ‘warm spaces’ across the district that will be available during the winter months. Having declared a cost-of-living emergency in July, the council will help local organisations with associated costs for anyone in need of a warm and safe space when the temperatures drop.

Councillor Nicholson added: “I am very proud of what we are doing in Lewes district and delighted that we can help people in the most need, particularly when you consider the government cuts to the grant that councils used to receive, that has made it very difficult to find money we can dedicate to this sort of crisis.”
