CHYNGTON LANE JUNCTION LABELLED 'DANGEROUS'

March 16th, 2026.

Residents living on and around Chyngton Lane in Seaford are demanding immediate action to address what many describe as a genuinely dangerous road junction, one they believe is an accident waiting to happen.

Chyngton Lane is the first road on the left off the A259 when driving into Seaford from Eastbourne, located only a short distance from the approach to Exceat Bridge.

Vehicles travel up the slope towards Seaford in a 50mph speed limit, and although the road changes to a 30mph zone at the top of the hill, just before the turning into Chyngton Lane and the entrance to the built-up area of Seaford, many vehicles continue at speeds significantly higher than the permitted limit. The combination of gradient, vehicle speed and traffic volume is claimed to create a serious safety problem for anyone attempting to exit the lane.

Steve Kemsley, (pictured above right), a Chyngton Lane resident said, “As a resident of Chyngton Lane I feel that the council should take notice of the residents’ concerns over safety at the junction with Eastbourne Road A259. I don’t know how a major incident hasn’t occurred. A lot of traffic coming into Seaford travels at excessive speeds. I have narrowly missed being hit on two occasions in the last
month.”

Mr Kemsley’s experience is far from unique. Multiple residents have reported similar close calls, describing incidents where cars exiting the lane have only narrowly avoided being struck side-on by passing vehicles.

East Sussex County Councillor Sam Adeniji, who represents the area, has been working with local residents to push for change. A petition calling on East Sussex County Council to act has been launched, with residents urging the authority to either install a visibility mirror at the junction or introduce traffic calming measures along the approaching stretch of the A259.

Cllr Sam Adeniji, (pictured abouve left), said, “Residents have been raising this for some time and frankly, the situation cannot be allowed to continue. This isn’t about minor inconvenience. People are having near misses on a regular basis. Something as straightforward as a visibility mirror could make a real difference here, and I am determined to see this junction made safer. East Sussex County Council needs to listen to the people who live here and take this seriously before someone gets hurt.”

There is also a wider planning context. Proposed changes to Exceat Bridge and the surrounding section of the A259 are likely to alter traffic patterns along this route, making it all the more important that the safety of this junction is reassessed now, as
part of the wider transport picture, rather than after a tragedy has occurred.
