BURLEYS TO THE RESCUE

January 24th, 2018.

Workers from Newhaven-based civil engineering company, Burleys, helped to avert a potential flood at Newhaven Quay earlier this month.

The Burleys team acted on an emergency call from Lewes District Council, giving them just an hour in which to put down sandbags amid fears that the very high tide would surge and flood the docks.

They immediately left the jobs on which they were working and raced to help the port authority, district council and Newhaven Town Council officers put down 700 sandbags as the tide rose.

The speedy action comes mid-way through work on the £18million Environment Agency’s Newhaven flood alleviation scheme.

Working in partnership with Lewes District Council, the scheme, which is due for completion in autumn 2019, sees major infrastructure work taking place along the coast at Newhaven. The aim is to provide a one in 200 years standard of protection – which means every year the risk of flooding is just 0.5%.

The project was instigated following the major storm surge which hit the south coast in December 2013 which saw hurricane-force winds and the highest tides in 60 years in some places.

The tidal surge in the Newhaven area affected more than 50 properties in the Railway Road area and closed the railway line between Lewes and Seaford.

The work, when complete will reduce the risk of flooding to approximately 430 homes and 390 businesses in and around Newhaven as well as flooding on roads, railways and the train station.

The majority of the £18 million funding comes from the Environment Agency, with the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and South East Local Enterprise Partnership each contributing £1.5 million, as part of their wider commitment to regeneration in Newhaven.
