This September, residents of Lewes and the surrounding area can explore a different side of the district, by taking part in a festival of themed walks led by local experts: Walk This Way.


Lewes, Seaford, Newhaven, Ditchling and the surrounding villages will feature in the Walk ThisWay festival, organised by Visit Lewes. The series of guided walks will take place across thedistrict over two consecutive weekends in September.

This year’s themed walks offer something for everyone to enjoy. The themes cover a host oftopics and interests, from pubs to poetry, trees to topography and include new walks providingan insight into salt mills along the Ouse and celebrating 50 years of Lewes Town Council.

The programme takes in the whole district with town, coastal and country walks, most of whichare suitable for all ages and accessibility levels.Helen Browning-Smith, Tourism & Arts Manager at Lewes District Council said, “We have a greatlineup this year, which will really shine a light on some of the more obscure aspects of localhistory and culture.

“We are grateful to all our walk leaders for agreeing to share their knowledge and expertise. Welook forward to welcoming walkers who are keen to get and discover more about our specialcorner of Sussex.”

The festival is organised by Visit Lewes, the tourism and culture board of Lewes District Council,also responsible for established favourites Artwave and Brewhaven.Councillor Johnny Denis, Lewes District Council cabinet member for arts, culture and tourism &leisure said, “Walking is a great activity for body and mind. Walk This Way offers the ideas andopportunities to explore our towns, villages, coast and countryside and to learn more about ourheritage and culture along the way”.

Most walks cost £5 to join, and are free for under 12s. More detail and links to tickets can befound at www.visitlewes.co.uk and a printed programme listing all the available walks can bepicked up at the Lewes District Council office in Cliffe Precinct, Seaford Tourist InformationCentre, and numerous shops, cafes, pubs and other venues around the district.

The festival takes place over two consecutive weekends; September, the 7th and 8th, then the 14th and 15th.With around 30 walks to choose from, with varying levels of intensity and terrain, there’ssomething to interest everyone.
