TWO SHOUTS FOR NEWHAVEN LIFEBOAT

March 16th, 2017.

The Newhaven Lifeboat crew and the RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland were called out to two reported incidents yesterday.

Persons cut off by incoming tide

The RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland and her volunteer crew were launched yesterday at 11:13am to two people cut off by the tide under the cliffs west of Newhaven breakwater.

One person had safely made their way back onto the shingle west beach at Newhaven and raised the alarm. Another person was still cut off by the incoming tide after trying to recover their pet dog from the water.

The lifeboat quickly arrived at the position given and launched its inflatable daughter boat (Y boat) with two crew members on board wearing dry suits. They located the adult male and dog in a cave which was being flooded by the incoming tide.

The Y boat safely manoeuvred close to the casualties and then recovered both the man and his pet. Both were unharmed.

The casualties were transferred to Newhaven’s west shingle beach in the Y boat where Coastguards were standing by.

The Y boat was recovered and the lifeboat returned to station at 11:40.

Coastguards have urged people to check tide times before walking under cliffs.

Many free mobile phone tide apps are available.

In a Coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for Coastguard.

Newhaven lifeboat launched to reports of a person fallen from cliffs
The RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland and her volunteer crew were launched for the second time yesterday at 3:15pm to reports of a possible woman fallen from cliffs in the Telscombe area.

The lifeboat arrived at the position given and immediately launched its inflatable daughter boat (Y boat). Whilst Coastguard teams searched the shoreline the Y boat searched close to the coastline, with the main lifeboat searching further offshore.

Weather conditions were perfect with both calm and clear conditions. Following a comprehensive search of the area nothing was found and it is thought to be a false alarm with good intent.

The daughter ‘Y boat’ was recovered at 4.00pm and then the lifeboat returned to station at 4:40ppm. The lifeboat was ready for service shortly afterwards.
