ST GEORGES DAY CELEBRATION

April 20th, 2018.

Last Monday at 6.00pm, members and friends of the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George attended St Andrew's Church, Alfriston, for their annual St George's Day Service. They had been joined by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field and Mrs Field, and by the High Sheriff, Major General John Moore-Bick CBE and Mrs Moore-Bick, as well as the Chair of Lewes District Council, Cllr Stephen Gauntlett, Mayor of Telscombe, Cllr Joanna Wilkins and the Mayor of Seaford, branch member, Cllr Linda Wallraven. Newhaven Town was represented by Cllr Steve Saunders who is also Vice President of the Seahaven Branch.

The bells rang out at 6.00pm in honour of St George, followed by the service conducted by Revd Christyan James. Everyone then walked across the Tye to Deans Place Hotel for a formal dinner which started with the traditional Ceremony of the Beef. The Chef carried the beef in to be tasted by the Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE, who declared it great and rewarded the Chef with a tankard of English Ale. There was enthusiastic applause for the ceremony. After the guests were welcomed by the Chairman, the Lord Lieutenant replied and gave the toast 'England and St George'.

At the end of the evening, the President, Laurie Holland, gave the toast to Absent Friends, but also told the assembly of his experience the previous Saturday, where along with other branch members he attended The Royal Society of St George's annual service, wreath laying and parade of 500 service cadets at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. This was attended by members from around the country and after the parade everyone adjourned to Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior, then to lunch in the Abbey's Cryptorium. The National Standard on that Saturday was carried by our branch chairman, accompanied by the branch standard carried by Frank Holland.
