SEAFORD AGE UK SHOP APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS

May 10th, 2017.

The Age UK shop in Seaford is calling on local people to sign up as volunteers and help support the day-to-day running of the shop, which raises vital funds for the Charity’s work with older people. The appeal comes as part of Volunteer’s Week 2017, which celebrates people who give up their time and inspires others to get involved to help make a difference.

There are 410 Age UK shops across the country which are supported by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. There are numerous benefits to volunteering for Age UK - as well as helping the Charity support older people and making a difference to the local community, volunteers can also make new friends, discover new interests and develop new skills.

Highlighting the rewards that volunteering brings, nine out of ten Age UK volunteers said that they feel they are making a difference with their work, whilst 88% said they feel part of the local community. A further nine in ten recommend the Charity as a place to volunteer because of the positive experience they have had.

Making it even easier for people to give up time to volunteer, Age UK is also offering flexible opportunities across its network of shops, providing volunteers with shorter volunteering time slots in order to fit around busy lives.

Volunteers can expect to support the shop in a range of activities, both behind the scenes and on the shop floor, including serving customers, merchandising and creating displays, managing stock donations and assisting with shop administration.

Jordan - Shop Manager the Age UK Seaford shop, said: “The Age UK shop in Seaford is reliant on the support of generous volunteers and we are appealing to anyone in Seaford, Newhaven or even Brighton and Eastbourne, who may be able to give up some time to help out. Not only will you meet new people and be a key part of the local community, you will also be helping Age UK raise vital funds. We are in desperate need of anyone who can give up their time to work our till for a few hours a day and work our shop floor.

"If you think you could help, please come and have a chat and we can organise a taster session for you. Even small amounts of time really can make a huge difference.”

Jill, a volunteer at the Age UK Seaford shop, said: “Volunteering with the Age UK shop in Seaford is really enjoyable. As well doing a variety of different tasks in the shop, you meet new people every day. I have made good friends with both the shop team and people in the local community and would encourage anyone thinking of signing up to give volunteering a go. Our team has a big heart and plenty of time, it just takes a little nudge to get out of the door and approach us, the rest is easy!”

Age UK shops generate much-needed funds for the Charity’s work with older people, whilst encouraging everyone to recycle unwanted goods including clothing and accessories, gifts, toys, household items and shoes. The money raised by Age UK’s shops will help the Charity to support its local Age UK partners to deliver hands-on local services such as lunch clubs and home safety checks, as well as hugely important national work like its free advice line (open 365 days a year) and vital campaigning work.
