Seaford Green Party councillors are demanding that a safer school streets scheme and a zebra crossing must be introduced at Chyngton School to make sure that children can safely walk, cycle and scoot to school.Green Party councillor for Seaford East, Becky Francomb, presented a petition, signed by almost 300 residents, calling for the road safety measures to East Sussex County Council yesterday, December the 2nd.
A school streets scheme would see traffic-calming measures brought in around the school at drop-off and pick-up times, and a zebra crossing on Hillside Avenue / Walmer Road would give safe access at all times to the school and the Walmer Road Recreation Ground.
Councillor Francomb said: “Traffic around the school has increased hugely over recent years, and there have been near misses with children backed into as cars try to park, or manoeuvre on zig-zag lines."
Campaigning by Seaford Green Party councillors has managed to get Chyngton onto a list of schools to be considered for the safer school streets scheme, but a decision by East Sussex County Council is not expected until early 2026.
“A Chyngton Primary school streets scheme would keep kids safe on their way to and from this school. But we know other local schools face similar problems which need to be tackled too. Ensuring safe streets in residential areas, particularly near schools, benefits the whole community,” said Green Party councillor for Seaford East, Ezra Cohen.
Councillor Francomb added: “There is a busy road and bus route which cuts across the Chyngton Estate and many children, elderly people, and those with disabilities don’t feel safe crossing the road to the park, school and shops, limiting opportunities for active independent lives.
“Residents have been calling for a crossing here for over 15 years, but when safety was assessed by the county council they said the road didn’t meet the level needed to take action because there had not yet been any 'personal injury crashes'.
“It’s just awful that we are waiting for someone to get hurt before taking action which would improve so many residents’ daily lives.”
