PLAYGROUNDS STAY SHUT

June 9th, 2020.

Childrens' play areas in Lewes district remain closed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in line with government guidance. Lewes District Council is reminding families that play areas will stay shut until the government announces a re-opening date, which has not yet been set.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, explained: “With the opening up of some facilities in local parks such as tennis courts and bowling greens, I have received several requests that we do the same for our children’s play areas. However, there are compelling reasons against re-opening them, and besides, it is not within our gift to do so. This is a government decision as part of national measures to control the coronavirus pandemic and as such, play areas will need to remain closed until further notice.?"

Other reasons for the closures are:

· Play areas are small enclosed areas where it is impossible to maintain social distancing

· Children tend to touch all parts of play equipment as they climb and slide – making the spread of the virus a real threat.

· It is not possible to clean the play equipment after each use

· It is not possible to limit the number of children and adults entering play areas as they are not staffed

Councillor Carr added: “We are doing our best to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus and prevent a second wave while supporting our NHS and keeping play areas shut is an element of this approach. We all look forward to the time when the opening of play parks is allowed, but until then I'm afraid they must remain closed.

“In the meantime, I’m delighted that so many people are making the most of our wonderful local nature reserves and other green spaces, while maintaining social distancing.”
