PLANET FRIENDLY PLATE WEEK

September 20th, 2021.

The Seahaven Community Food team are hosting a schedule of activities in the week commencing the 27th of September. Planet Friendly Plate week is based on what we eat and where it comes from. The aim is to raise awareness about food security issues in conjunction with the Great Big Green Week, a campaign led by the Climate Coalition in the run-up to COP26.

Making ‘planet friendly’ choices when deciding what to eat is all about small changes, not about being perfect.

Perhaps swapping meat for a veggie option once or twice a week, or eating meat that is local or organic. It is about being conscious of food waste and food packaging and trying to choose the option that is good for the planet.

Recent studies have shown that food systems generate “more than a third - 34% - of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions”, (forbes.com:2021), so taking action is vital in tackling runaway climate change.

As well as celebrating planet-friendly plates all week, Dr Nancy Manifold will be hosting a Plant-Based Cookery workshop at Denton Island Community Kitchen, to showcase ways to make the most of delicious, seasonal vegetables.

At the Community Supermarkets in Peacehaven and Newhaven there will be the chance to try some planet-friendly snacks and discuss how to make planet-friendly choices on a budget.

On Wednesday the 29th of September, the Seahaven Community Food team will be having a Low Carbon Lunch and encourage others to join by eating something planet-friendly and sharing photos with the hashtags #food4planet #lowcarbonlunch #sustainablefoodplaces #seahavencommunityfood
