Public gardens across Lewes district will not be showcasing their usual summer floral displays this summer because of plant supply issues due to the Covid-19 crisis - however a pollinator-friendly alternative is being sown instead.

Lewes District Council uses around 45,000 bedding plants every summer to create beautiful flower displays at its gardens which include  ort Road Recreation Ground in Newhaven, bedding areas along Station Approach in Seaford and Southover Grange Gardens in Lewes,

Due to the pandemic suppliers have not been able to grow the usual flowering plants this year, as this work was considered non-essential under government guidance.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, explained: “While we are unable to provide our usual beautiful displays this summer due to circumstances beyond our control, I am very pleased that we are taking this opportunity to sow the beds with an annual flower mix that is pollinator friendly. These plants will be beneficial for bees, butterflies and other insects, as well as providing a wonderful, colourful display this summer.”
