NEWHAVEN MAYOR PRESENTS FIVE DEFIBRILLATORS ACROSS THE TOWN

May 16th, 2017.

With the help of the East Sussex Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field, and former High Sheriff, Juliet Smith DL., Newhaven Mayor, Steve Saunders, and his Mayoress, Sharon Bewley, presented five defibrillators to sites around Newhaven last week.

The first was presented by Juliet Smith DL, to Sainsbury's and will be one of the supermarket's first stores nationwide to site a public access unit. Manager Jason Howell was pleased to receive the unit and thanked Steve and Sharon for their hard work in persuading Sainsbury's PLC to accept the defibrillator.

The next presentation was to Mark Gilbert at Tates Garden Paradise, the attraction that welcomes thousands of visitors throughout the year and is popular with all ages.

The Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field and his wife Margaret, were welcomed by Steve and Sharon to the Hillcrest Centre, where a unit was presented to the Trustees of the building, including Joan and Peter Rhodes. The trustees were delighted with the life-saving equipment, which they were sure would be of benefit to the hundreds of users and visitors to the facility.

The party then moved on to the RNLI Station at the port, where Mike Betts and Coxswain Paul Legendre, received a public access defibrillator, that will be sited on the outside of the building and hopefully used by crews at sea. It will be one of the first RNLI stations in the country to have a defibrillator installed.

The final machine was presented to Duncan Kerr and centre manager Kath Dudley at Newhaven Fort, which attracts thousands of visitors young and old.

Over £6,600 was raised throughout the year, through Tea Dances, Quizzes and a Gala Dinner in April.

Steve Saunders said; "I would like to thank all the businesses, community groups and individuals, that have supported Newhaven and made this such a successful year.

"We have such a great town, and while it's been hard work, hopefully, everyone has had as much fun as myself and Sharon have.

"After two years as mayor and over an amazing £19,300 raised for good causes, including the RNLI, Seahaven Responders and Blind Veterans UK, it's time to hand over the chain of office to my successor June Dyer.

"One last thank you to Sharon, who at our final event, the Tea Dance on April the 30th, became my fiancee. I could not have done any of it without her support."
