NEWLANDS NEWS

October 16th, 2019.

Lewes District Council’s Planning Applications Committee will be considering the two current applications submitted by Bellway Homes for residential development of the Newlands School site at a meeting at the Downs Leisure Centre on the 30th of October commencing at 5.00pm.

Lewes District Council has acknowledged the level of public interest and the local significance of the applications in moving the venue of the meeting from County Hall to Seaford.

The two applications to be determined are:

LW/19/0475 - Demolition of existing school building and construction of two buildings to

and

LW/19/0258 - AMENDED PROPOSAL - Reserved approval for matters of layout, scale, appearance and landscaping of a residential development of 162 homes, pursuant to application LW/16/0800 (to run concurrently with full application LW/19/0475 for the demolition of the existing school building and provision of 21 residential units)

An important issue which is likely to be debated at the meeting is the affordable housing provision in the proposals, which has been increased to 46 units in the amended scheme from the original proposed 14 units. Also, the 2-acre space set aside for football will instead be used as public park open space. In lieu of the football pitch, approximately £350,000 will be transferred to Seaford Town Council to provide a new football facility of 3 or 4 pitches elsewhere.

Residents who wish to speak at the meeting can find the District Council’s rules for speaking at Committee meetings HERE.

The Town Council considered its response to the applications at a Planning and Highways Committee meeting held at The View at Seaford Head Golf Club on the 8th of August. Almost 100 local residents attended the meeting, and many took part in an open question and answer session prior to members formal consideration of the applications.

The Committee resolved at that meeting to give general support to the applications. However, Lewes District Council will make the final decision on this planning matter, as it is the planning authority.
