NEWHAVEN TIMES OUT NOW

August 3rd, 2021.

The latest edition of Newhaven Times is now available at Dees Newsagents in Newhaven High Street, or you can call into Newhaven Museum at Garden Paradise in Avis Road to buy a copy. The museum is open between 11.00am and 4.00pm today, Tuesday and also Wednesday, Friday and Saturday each week.

The cover photo this month is by the artist Eric Ravilious. Painted in 1935 and entitled Channel Steamer Leaving Harbour, it is a beautifully lit painting, (in the style nocturne), of the ship en route to Dieppe as it passes the Hope Inn. Although thought to be of the Brighton V, which came into service in 1934, it was identified by Andy Friend in Ravilious and Co: the Pattern of Friendship (2017) in which the author says, “ . . . probably the night before . . . he had sketched the view across Sleepers Hole . . . of the distinctive profile of the SS Rouen leaving on a scheduled 10pm departure for Dieppe.”

Eric Ravilious is the featured artist in this month’s issue of Newhaven Times, where readers can see two more of his paintings of the town’s harbour on pages 12 and 13.

Other articles in this edition include; A personal history of the Newhaven Telephone Exchange, The Sea House, Newhaven Prisoners of War Comfort Fund, Harbour Reflections and the Quiz.

All this for just £2.00 with all proceeds going toward the museum running costs.
