NEW PERMIT SYSTEM FOR GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS

January 25th, 2021.

Lewes District Council has introduced a new streamlined system for its garden waste collection service, using bin permits, online payments and all renewals at the same time every year. The cost remains £70 a year, equating to less than 20p per day.

Rather than asking residents to renew their subscription on the anniversary of their sign-up date, the service will now run annually from April to the end of the following March each year.

A simplified online payment system means that residents who wish to continue using this service for 2021/22, are asked to renew online between now and Friday, March 19, to guarantee no interruption in the service.

Everyone who uses the green waste collection service has been sent a letter informing them of this deadline and letting them know that renewals after this date may result in a delay in the arrival of their new permit for 2021/22 and a pause in collections.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, explained the new bin permit system, saying: “Once you have renewed, we will send you a unique, weather-proof permit to stick on to your garden waste bin. For customers who are not online, you will be able to renew over the phone on 01273 471600 from February 2.

“The permit lets our waste service team know you are a fully paid-up member of the service. From April the 1st, bin collections will not be made without one of these. Permits will have all your collection dates for the year printed on it, replacing the calendars we have sent you previously.”

Additional bins at the same property are still available for £35 per year.

Councillor Carr added: “Some changes have been made to our popular garden waste service to improve efficiency and ensure it is as cost-effective as possible.

"I would urge current users to get online soon before the deadline to ensure they get a continuous service. It’s a quick and easy process to renew.”
