FREE CADDY LINERS PROMOTES FOOD RECYCLING

May 14th, 2020.

Lewes District Council is introducing free delivery of compostable liners to encourage residents to continue recycling their leftover food during the Covid-19 crisis.

While free compostable liners for food waste have long been available to residents, these had to be collected from locations across the district such as council offices or tourist information centres.

With these pick-up locations currently closed and vulnerable residents unable to leave their homes to shop, the council is now offering delivery of liners free of charge.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, said: “Our food waste scheme is a great way of reducing your impact on the environment and it raises awareness of unnecessary waste.

“We want to encourage residents to either continue or start using this excellent scheme so people can now simply order online and we’ll happily deliver a roll of liners to their door.”

There are around 50 liners on each roll and because they are designed to decompose, they have a short shelf life of only around six months.

All food waste is composted down locally and turned into soil conditioner for use in gardens.

Residents who sign up now will receive their first roll along with two caddies – one for the kitchen counter and the other to present for collection.

Councillor Carr added: “Even if you already compost at home, you can use the service to recycle meat, dairy, bones and cooked food.”

Food waste collections are on the same day as usual household bin collections and are emptied into refuse vehicles that have a separate compartment for food debris.
