FESTIVE CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT SHOPS

November 24th, 2020.

Shoppers are being encouraged to support independent shops in Lewes and Newhaven this Christmas with the launch of two campaigns that celebrate the ‘quality and diversity’ on offer.

Visit Lewes has joined forces with the Lewes Pound, Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes High Street Traders Association to run the Shop Independent at Christmas campaign.

In Newhaven, the campaign is being driven by Visit Lewes, Newhaven Town Council and Meeching estate agents.

Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe, Lewes District Council Cabinet member for Tourism and Devolution, said: “Christmas is likely to be a little different this year but one thing that hasn’t changed is the wonderful array of independent shops we are lucky to have in Lewes district.

“Now is the perfect time of year to enjoy the quality and diversity of shops in our area while also supporting traders, who have experienced a very challenging year and need our custom now, more than ever.”

Shoppers in both towns have the added incentive of taking part in prize draws to win Christmas hampers brimming with goodies donated by independent shops in their area.

In Lewes, three super hampers are up for grabs containing local produce, books, jewellery, beer, doggie treats, toiletries, sports gear and an array of vouchers. Two runners up will win framed limited edition prints of the new Lewes Pound artwork, created by Visit Lewes.

The prizes will be on display in Lewes Tourist Information Centre window from Friday, November 27, to Friday, December 4.

Two Newhaven shoppers will take home fantastic hampers packed with local food and drink, books, beauty treatments, homewares and vouchers. These prizes will be on display at Meeching estate agents in Newhaven High Street throughout December.

To participate in the draw, shoppers should firstly collect a free tote bag from Lewes Information Centre, Newhaven Town Council or Meeching estate agents from Thursday, December the 3rd.

The bag contains a stamp card and a list of participating independent shops. People can fill their bag with gifts and each time a purchase is made, they collect a stamp, sticker or other proof of purchase on the card. After five purchases, they should return the completed card to either Lewes Tourist Information Centre, Newhaven Town Council or Meeching estate agents for entry into the draw.

Those preferring to stay at home for now can still take part. Purchases should be made either online, by phone or by click & collect from any of the participating local shops offering the service, and five receipts emailed to events@lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk

Lewes entries must be received by noon on Friday, December 18th, and in Newhaven by noon on Tuesday, December 22nd.

Councillor O’Keeffe said: “There are some wonderful prizes to be won so I encourage you to shop local and fill your bags with festive joy.”
