COUNCIL CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO TACKLE DOG FOULING

April 10th, 2017.

Lewes District Council has launched an initiative at Riverside Park in Newhaven to stop dog fouling. Several dog owners and members of the local community met with officers from Lewes District Council to highlight action in tackling the anti-social issue of dog fouling in and around Riverside Park, which is the first of several sites to be targeted for positive action.

The Friends of Riverside Park have secured sponsorship for a dog pooh bag dispenser which is located at the southern end of the popular path near Robinson Road, Newhaven. The dispenser is regularly refilled with bags for dog owners to use to pick up after their dogs.

Dog walkers are encouraged to use this facility and dispose of the bags in the bins provided on site.

Launching the scheme, Scot Reid, Head of Customer Services at Lewes District Council, said: “Lewes District Council takes dog fouling very seriously. This campaign will raise awareness of this anti-social offence and remind people of their responsibility to clear up after their dogs.”

Over recent months an increase of dog fouling incidents have been identified which has prompted the need for positive action.

Animal warden patrols will be increased and a ‘Paws on Watch’ scheme adopted where members of the community sign up with Lewes District Council to report incidents of dog fouling and other anti-social behaviour, together with other incidents which they believe may be suspicious.

Anyone interested in joining the Paws on Watch scheme across the district can enrol on line at www.lewes.gov.uk/PawsOnWatch or by contacting the animal control team on 01273 471600.
