COMMUNITY SUPERMARKET OPENS IN NEWHAVEN

May 6th, 2021

Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) has launched a new weekly Community Supermarket at Denton Island Community Centre.

Newhaven Community Supermarket is open every Monday from 11.00am to 3.00pm to members, and is already making a positive impact.

Community Supermarkets operate on the principle that everyone should have access to healthy, affordable food, close to home. Members can access food and essential household items and will be invited to contribute on a pay as you feel basis, based on what they can afford.

Penny Shimmin, CEO of SCDA said, “There are many people in Newhaven affected by changed financial circumstances and increasing numbers of people, including families with children, accessing Seahaven Foodbank. The Community Supermarket offers a step out of emergency food help. It is a chance to tackle hardship and harness the immense willingness of local residents to support their neighbours.”

Community Supermarkets are a sustainable, long-term, community-focused solution to food insecurity. The aim is to help people move beyond foodbank use, or to help reduce a family’s need for a foodbank, whilst also reducing food waste and connecting local residents.

SCDA continues to provide emergency food parcels to residents in Newhaven via Seahaven Foodbank, but the Community Supermarket allows members to make choices about the food they get and the volunteer team is able to respond directly the needs of the community, adding a much needed social element to the service.

The food and other items at Newhaven Community Supermarket are obtained from a variety of sources, including Fareshare Sussex and local businesses, helping to reduce food waste and keeping the environmental impact as low as possible.
