Bookings have re-opened for bulky waste collections in Lewes district after the service was temporarily suspended in mid-March due to the coronavirus crisis.

Bulky waste covers items which cannot be recycled or disposed of in household or communal bins such as kitchen appliances and furniture.

With household waste, recycling and garden waste collections continuing as usual, bulky waste was the only element of Lewes District Council’s Environment First service affected by the pandemic.

Councillor Julie Carr, the Co-operative Alliance’s Cabinet Member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, said: “We know how important waste disposal is to our residents and I am very pleased we are re-instating bulky collections after just a short layoff.

“I am very proud this was the only minimal change to our excellent waste collection services – a huge achievement, and I know many people have expressed their thanks directly to our Environment First crews.”

Waste crews and street cleansing teams will be soon be wearing hi-vis jackets with a message reminding people to keep two metres away while they carry out their work.

“Please help us to follow social distancing measures for the safety of both our workers and residents,” added Councillor Carr.
