August 18th, 2024.

Sussex Blazing Saddles (SBS), a project exploring the pioneering heritage of women and cycling since the 19th century, is holding free public events in Newhaven in the lead-up to an outdoor performance on Sunday, September the 8th.

Saturday, August 31st – Re-Imagining & Re-Making Sewing Workshop
In this free upcycling workshop, participants will reimagine cycle clips as fabulous fashion accessories, make colourful badges and transform old leggings into stylish shorts to wear cycling under skirts. This is a drop-in event, taking place at Hillcrest Community Centre, Newhaven between 12pm and 4pm.

Tuesday, September 3rd – Sussex Blazing Saddles talk
In the late 1890s, women transformed their clothing to be able to ride safely in shorter skirts or bloomers, and breathe more easily without corsets. For Newhaven Historical Society, SBS Creative Director Karen Poley will give a talk about the project and the heritage of women cycling across Sussex.

Sunday, September 8th – Blazing Saddles outdoor performance
Watch the Blazing Saddles FREE outdoor performance. Starting at Newhaven Skatepark & Pump Track at 2.30pm, the audience can follow the performance along the river to finish at The Sidings at 4.30pm.
