Local organisations could be eligible for a grant if they have an interesting or innovative idea about tackling crime, disorder or antisocial behaviour in Lewes district.

The grants are available from Eastbourne and Lewes District Community Safety Partnership, a multi-agency group comprising of representatives from the police, council, fire service, probation and voluntary sector. Together with members of the community, they work to make Lewes district a safer place.

In 2021/22, the partnership's priorities are:

· Addressing the incidence of anti-social behaviour and the importance of creating safe and welcoming community spaces,

· Tackling the incidence of hate crime, domestic and sexual abuse,

· Reducing the incidence of serious violence and knife crime,

· Supporting the street community and address related anti-social behaviour,

· Reducing the incidence of anti-social driving on our roads,

· Addressing the community impact of organised crime and drug dealing,


As well as helping co-ordinate the activities and plans, the partnership administers grants to fund projects and programmes that help local communities address these six priorities.

Over the past year, grants awarded in Lewes district have included a bike recycling project helping to build new skills for young people at risk of being drawn into anti-social behaviour, run by Trinity Church in Lewes, and tracking equipment to support speedwatch groups.

Councillor Johnny Denis, (pictured), Cabinet member for Communities and Customers at Lewes District Council, said: “I encourage local groups to come forward with their ideas for projects that support the partnership’s priorities and help us ensure the district is safe for residents and people working here.”
